1928: Firmin Filliers creates Filliers Dry Gin 28. For Firmin Filliers the creation of a traditional gin in 1928 was purely a question of logic. Juniper berries played as important a role in the production of gin as it did in the production of jenever. Firmin went about creating his gin recipe with patience adding a further 28 flavour enhancers from citrus fruits to exotic herbs and strong-flavoured roots. The result earned his product a place of honour on the list of our family of spirits: an exceptionally mild, refined and widely prized dry gin. When Firmin Filliers took the step to produce gin he was in fact perpetuating a piece of history. Because jenever had been considered to be the direct ancestor of gin since as far back as the 17th century. At the time English soldiers were fighting the Eighty Years’ War against Spain in the Low Lands. During this war the English discovered jenever. When they returned to England, English distillers tried to copy this unique and aromatic spirit. However, their attempts were in vain, because they were not in possession of the exact recipe. Hence the emergence of a derivative of jenever that was called gin (an abbreviation of ‘genever’).

Filliers Distillery

Filliers Distillery Whilst their gin was established and sold in 1928 it has kept rather quiet until more recent years… This was partly due to lack of interest in gin in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and partly because it was not exported to the UK. Filliers Dry Gin has only really been in the British market since 2012. This coy nature coincides with other aspects of Fillier’s best-kept secret, including the well-hidden botanical list. Based upon the 29th ingredient, juniper, the gin keeps a mild yet flavourful profile that we know includes citrus, spice and all things quite nice (herbs and roots too). Whilst each ingredient has been carefully picked, there does not appear to be anything too controversial added that can be detected on either the nose or the palate – no rare dragon fruit, snake oils, unicorn tears or other obscure references here – just traditional, tasty botanicals!\n
